Rubén Grilo (1981, Spain) lives and works in Berlin and Spain. He has a degree from Barcelona University and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam from 2011-12. Conceptual art is an important point of reference for Grilo’s practice that defies any medium-related categories. His work, ranging from PowerPoint presentations, laser-projected animation, light installations and sculptures made out of jeans and chocolate molds, is driven by the question how information and materiality are interlinked. Recently, he has been increasingly interested in mass-produced goods and their systems of production, their specific ways of materialization and how chance and error relate to these standardized processes. For the exhibition Otherwise, Unhinged, he has devised a paint that never dries.
His recent exhibitions include Proof of Concept at Union Pacific, London (2016); Rubén Grilo, Fundació Joan Miró - Espai13, Barcelona (2015); Mit eigener Hand, Hildesheim Kunstverein (2014); Drawings of Alien Control, V4ULT, Berlin (2013); Sudden Glory, Nogueras Blanchard - Madrid (2012) and Bioscope, Wilfried Lentz, Rotterdam (2012). His work has also been shown at Future Gallery, Berlin; Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz; Supplement, London; CA2M, Móstoles; Martin van Zomeren, Amsterdam; Botin Foundation, Santander, MARCO, Vigo; and CSS Bard - New York, among others.
